History First
There has been a lot of change over the years in Phoenix. At one time, Van Buren Street served as the “Eastern Gateway” to the city. The motels along Van Buren were cottage-like facilities that often-had terms associated with them like auto, motor, or tourist courts. Post-WWII, Van Buren served as the main thoroughfare of Phoenix. This themed lodging offered a sense of adventure and memories that made family vacations. This lasted until the 1970s, and then the decline began. This was primarily due to the construction of the Maricopa Freeway that would bypass Van Buren. As the newer, corporate lodging replaced the bungalow style lodging, the owners of Van Buren reinvented themselves as “adult” motels, and the decline continued to take its toll.
The city has gone through several development cycles that has brought downtown Phoenix back into focus for developers, business, and residents alike. The opportunities have expanded beyond the downtown area and created directional growth opportunities. This growth has provided untapped opportunity along the Van Buren corridor. Public and private resources are available to allocate towards new development and revitalization for the Van Buren corridor. Approved corridor and Village plans currently in place by the City of Phoenix paves the way for new opportunities and development. Working in collaboration with the City of Phoenix, area business owners, residents, schools, and the State of Arizona to produce a positive change is our focus.
24 SHBA is committed to highlighting the area accomplishments and working with the community to bring about continued positive change.
